The mist rising off the Potomac River carries a new aroma through the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia these days. Follow the scent of caramelized brown sugar, fresh yeast, and wood-fired hearths down the winding country roads of Berkeley County, and you will find yourself at Mountain View Amish Bakery.

This newly opened, family-run destination has quickly become a morning ritual for locals and a mandatory detour for travelers, offering a beautiful window into the world of traditional, scratch-made baking.

The Backstory

The story of Mountain View Bakery begins in the tight-knit agricultural communities of western Pennsylvania. For generations, the Yoder family operated a successful dairy farm and community orchard. However, as the family grew and land became increasingly scarce, several members of the younger generation looked southward toward the fertile, rolling hills of West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle. Captivated by the region’s rich orchard history and welcoming community, three generations of the Yoder family relocated to establish a homestead rooted in simple living and honest craft.

Housed in a meticulously constructed, timber-framed barn built by the family and their neighbors, the bakery is a testament to Old World heritage. In keeping with traditional lifestyle choices, the kitchen operates completely independent of the modern electrical grid. Instead, the bakers rely on an impressive, custom-built brick hearth oven fueled by local hardwood, alongside heavy-duty, hand-cranked mixers and cold-storage ice chests. Every batch of dough is kneaded by hand, allowed to rise slowly, and baked under the watchful eye of master bakers who tell when the oven is ready simply by the feel of the heat on their skin.

Favorite Items to Try

While the shelves are packed with everything from homemade egg noodles to hand-churned apple butter, a few standout items have already generated a massive local following:

The Morning Pastries

  • Glazed Cinnamon Sourdough Rings: Unlike modern donuts that rely on commercial yeast, these massive, pillowy rings are made from a 60-year-old family sourdough starter. Baked directly on the hearth stones and dipped in a rich vanilla-bean glaze while boiling hot, they offer a complex, slightly tangy depth that perfectly balances the sweet topping.
  • Pecan Sticky Buns: Pillowed with layers of dark brown sugar and Korintje cinnamon, these decadent buns are baked in giant cast-iron skillets. They are flipped upside down immediately upon leaving the oven, cascading a thick, gooey waterfall of honey-caramel glaze and roasted Georgia pecans over the top.

The Breads and Pies

  • Hearth-Baked Salt-Rising Bread: A rare heritage recipe that is notoriously difficult to master, this dense, fine-textured loaf is a true crowd-pleaser. It boasts a distinct, robust cheese-like aroma and yields a perfectly crisp, shatteringly brittle crust when toasted.
  • Wild Blackberry Shoofly Pie: A brilliant regional twist on a classic. The Yoders combine the traditional, gooey molasses crumb of a classic Pennsylvania Dutch shoofly pie with a thick ribbons of tart, wild blackberries hand-foraged from the surrounding West Virginia hillsides.
